The City of Phoenix is currently in the process of replacing streetlights with more energy-efficient LED lighting. Since their population is expected to double by 2050, the city wants to move forward with the project now. LED lighting will cut energy costs by 50 percent, improve pollution, and the quality of lighting will be better.
This move will increase the city's sustainability and hopefully draw businesses which value energy efficiency. In addition, LED lighting lasts longer than the current lighting. As LED lighting prices have come down, they’ve gained favorability in cities like Los Angeles, Boston, New York and Seattle.
Phoenix currently has 90,000 street lights. It’s the 6th largest city in the U.S. Your business may not be huge like the city, but it will benefit by using LED lighting. Here are some reasons:
Lower cost of energy will pay for the project
If a project doesn’t benefit the bottom line, it hardly ever becomes a priority for a business, because it has to be of long-term fiscal benefit in order to not bleed the company coffers. LED lighting offers this.
Better lighting quality (increased productivity and safety)
LED lighting eliminates glare, and can be found in warm or cool color tones. It also covers the area better, which can reduce accidents caused by poor visibility.
If your business goes green, it isn’t going to save the planet. However, it’s setting an example, and industry leaders are expected to set an example. Maybe you aren’t an industry leader. But, your employees and your customers, and everyone who knows you, will know you’ve gone green. The implication is that you care. That’s quite a good impression for a company to make.
Rebates and grants available
Arizona Public Service currently offers rebates on new construction and retrofitting for LED lighting. You can find out more about it here.
Not to be outdone, SRP currently offers a rebate program for not only LED lighting, but also for ENERGY STAR®, DesignLight™ Consortium or Lighting Design Lab-approved LED fixtures and lamps, T5 and T8 fluorescents, LED exit signs, daylight and occupancy sensor lighting controls and wifi-enabled smart thermostats. You can find out more about that here.
Increase the value of your building
If you own the building which houses your business, high-quality LED lighting will increase its value. Surprisingly, retrofitting to LED lighting isn’t a maintenance expense--it’s a capital improvement and the cost can, therefore, be amortized.
Even if your business isn’t the size of the city of Phoenix, the benefits of LED lighting make it worth the investment for cleaner, greener lighting all around. Call an electrician to schedule a consultation today. You’ll be surprised at the savings you can garner for your business.
